6 beautiful movies about French cuisine

When the days are short and/or the weather is bad, sometimes you just want to curl up on your sofa in front of a good movie. As I do love food with a passion, I love watching a good movie about food :-)

I have put together for you a list of 6 beautiful movies to get an insight into French cuisine: 5 that I have already watched and enjoyed and 1 that I am yet to watch.

• Ratatouille (2007)

I know this is an animation movie and one could say a children’s movie but this is my favourite movie about French cuisine! It shows two of the most important things I am trying to convey through this blog: anyone can cook and there is magic behind flavour combinations when cooking.

Well you got it it is the story of rat who cooks… I know it is a bit of an unexpected match but it works there!

• Chocolat (2000, French title: Le chocolat)

Juliette Binoche is a quintessentially French lady, a charming brunette. She stars in this movie with Johnny Depp. The movie cast is alone a great reason to watch it but this is without considering how beautiful the story is. It reveals the hidden powers of chocolate with hints of love and temptation. 

The movie is about a woman and her daughter, who open a “chocolaterie” (chocolate shop) in a small and quiet French village.

• Julie and Julia (2009)

I love this movie. Whether it is because of the wonderful actresses staring in it (Meryl Streep and Amy Adams) or because it deals about blogging, life meaning, food… I don’t know but I really enjoyed watching it (a couple of time actually, it did not help that one of my girlfriend bought me the DVD :-))) 

The movie is about Julia Child’s beginning as a cook and Julie Powel’s challenge to cook her way through Julia Child’s first cookbook: Mastering the art of French cooking.

• Haute Cuisine (2012, French title: Les saveurs du Palais)

What I particularly enjoyed about this movie is the fact that it shows you what happens behind the scenes a l’Elysee: the French president official residence. I loved as well  how cooking to very high standards all came back to the non fussy homey fare :-)

The story is the one of Danièle Mazet-Delpeuch, who was appointed as French president François Mitterrand private chef.

• Le Chef (2012, French title: Comme un chef)

Le Chef is a French comedy I am yet to watch. I am really keen to do so because I love French comedies in general and the cast -Jean Reno and Michael Young- and story look great. 

The IMDB story line is the following: “A veteran chef faces off against his restaurant group’s new CEO, who wants to the establishment to lose a star from its rating in order to bring in a younger chef who specializes in molecular gastronomy.” 

I will let you know more as soon as I get to watch it.

• The Hundred Foot Journey (2014, French title: Les recettes du bonheur)

I love this movie. It shows how two cuisines with a strong heritage, French and Indian here, can blend to create dishes and tastes of the highest standards. The young Indian chef got his career to a great start with what he learnt from his mum too ;-)

This is the story of the Kadam family, who leaves India for France where they open a restaurant directly across the road from of the one of Madame Mallory, which happens to be Michelin-starred.
